Is CBD Good For Cats?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid compound found in the cannabis plant. It is claimed to have some beneficial properties, such as being a great pain reliever, calming nerves and reducing inflammation. It works by interacting with our body’s endocannabinoid system. Cats also have a cannabinoid system, so it can be assumed that CBD has similar effects on cats as it does on humans.

Research into CBD and its medicinal properties is still in its infancy, especially when it comes to CBD for pets. Any claims surrounding its benefits for cats are based primarily on anecdotal evidence of experiences cat owners have had giving their cats CBD. If you decide to give your pet CBD, you should realize that you are doing this entirely at your own, and your pet’s, risk.

That being said, the anecdotal evidence is overwhelmingly positive and we do believe that there is validity to real world consumer testing at the scale we’re seeing in the CBD market today. Cat owners report a wide range of benefits and improvements they are seeing in their cats, which they relate to them being given CBD.

Is Full Spectrum CBD Better?

When you are looking to buy CBD oil for yourself or your cat, you will see that some brands offer full spectrum oils, while others tout their products being pure CBD. What’s the difference and which is best for your cat?

Pure CBD, or CBD isolate, products are products that contain only one cannabinoid: cannabidiol. All other cannabis compounds have been removed or discarded during the CBD extraction process, leaving only the pure CBD behind. Using a pure CBD product eliminates the risk of unforeseen interaction effects or side effects from any of the other cannabinoids, such as THC.

Full spectrum oils contain a whole range of cannabinoids and terpenes besides CBD. Full spectrum products are believed to be more potent than pure CBD because of what scientists call an “entourage effect”. Research indicates that bindings between different cannabinoid compounds can enhance the beneficial effects each of them has.

However, as with all research into CBD and claims about its health benefits, this should be taken with a grain of salt.

In reality, the entourage effect has only been observed under very specific conditions with very specific compounds that occur naturally in the human body. The conclusions of this research are not necessarily transferable to either animals or cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. In fact, more recent studies suggest that cannabis compounds actually do not display this proposed entourage effect.

Of course, additional peer reviewed research may provide a different view in the future. But as it stands right now, there is no proof that full spectrum CBD is better for you or your cat. The most important thing is that you look for a product that is third party tested with the test results available for inspection. And listen to what others have to say about it. The science may be lagging behind when it comes to CBD for cats, but there are plenty of pet owners out there who have tested it for you and are more than willing to share their experiences.

Can Cats Have CBD Oil With THC?

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the compound in cannabis that makes you feel high. While most humans will experience this high as relaxing, or even pleasurable, it is known to cause severe stress in animals. Therefore, it is not advisable to give your cat CBD products that include THC.

Luckily, regulations state that the THC level in CBD products for pets should not exceed 0.3%, which is low enough for it not to bother your cat or dog. This does underscore the importance of buying only CBD products that are third party tested. The test results will include the exact amount of THC found in the batch you purchase, so you can make sure it is safe for your cat.

Cannabidiol itself is not an illegal substance. Tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound, is the one that gives the cannabis plant and all things related to it an unnecessary bad rep. However, views on cannabis keep changing with the times, and so do the laws surrounding it.

Generally speaking, CBD is legal in all 50 states. Still, each state has its own rules and regulations. If you are looking to buy CBD, you should always check the current rules that apply in your state before purchasing.

That said, most CBD products for cats that are on the US market take care to adhere to as many of the rules as possible. As such, their products contain little to no THC, which allows them to ship to all states.

Best CBD Products For Cats

The most common form to administer CBD in is oil. The CBD oil that is extracted from the hemp plant is diluted using a carrier oil, usually hemp oil, fish oil or vegetable oil. You can add this CBD oil to your cat’s food or give it to them orally. If your cat doesn’t like this, you can also try rubbing it on the inside of their ears where the fur stops. It will take longer to absorb into the bloodstream this way and the effect may be weaker, but your cat won’t have to taste it.

There are also other options for cats besides CBD oil that you can try, like lickable pastes, powders, treats and even topical ointments. We’ve included a wide range of CBD products in our reviews, so you can choose a solution fit for your cat.

Best CBD Oil For Cats With FIV: CBD Dog Health HEAL (1100 mg)

CBD Dog Health is an all-American pet health company dedicated to producing quality CBD products that actually help your dog or cat feel their best self. They source their hemp legally from farms in the US. What’s more, the hemp is grown without the use of any pesticides or herbicides and no solvents or chemicals are used in the CO2 extraction process, which ensures that you get a super clean product.

CBD Dog Health’s CBD oils are all full spectrum oils. They provide third party testing results right on their product pages, so you can check which cannabinoids are present and in what quantities before you make a purchase.

There are not that many customer reviews on CBD Dog Health’s website, though the ones that are there are all extremely positive. Their Facebook page, however, is filled with great reviews and stories from people that have used CBD Dog Health products and seen great results.

HEAL is very potent, containing as much as 37 mg of CBD per milliliter. As such, it is great for cats whose immune system is compromised due to FIV or cancer and for cats with seizures. Pet owners who have tried CBD Dog Health HEAL say they see great improvements in their pets within weeks of starting them on this CBD oil.

If you are looking for a lower potency product, CBD Dog Health offers two more CBD oils for cats. CALM is perfect for cats that suffer from anxiety, and EASE is great for cats with various ailments that can leave them feeling uncomfortable, such as arthritis, IBD or dental disease. Each of these oils contain 9mg of CBD per milliliter.

You can buy CBD Dog Health’s products directly from their website as a one time purchase, or you can subscribe and get a 10% discount. If you are not ready to subscribe and you’re a first time customer, you can sign up for CBD Dog Health’s email list to get 10% off of your first order.

Since HEAL is such a potent product, the price of a single bottle is higher than average ($99.99). However, when you calculate the price per mg CBD, it is only $0.09 at full price, which is very competitive. What’s more, with the 10% discount the price drops to just $0.08 per mg CBD, making this the most cost-effective product on our list.

Best CBD Oil For Nervous Cats: The Anxious Pet Organic Hemp Oil (400 mg)

Cats are emotional creatures. Changes in their environment or routine, like a new addition to the family or a vet visit, can cause them a lot of stress. And some cats are just nervous about everything. The founders of The Anxious Pet have experienced this firsthand and know how stressful it can be for pet parents to deal with a nervous cat or dog. That’s why they set out to create a line of CBD products specifically designed to reduce anxiety in pets.

The Anxious Pet’s Organic Hemp Oil for cats is a full spectrum CBD oil, supplemented with organic coconut oil. It contains 13 mg of CBD per milliliter. The recommended dosages seem to be tweaked to dogs instead of cats. According to the instructions, animals weighing less than 25 lbs (that’s basically all cats) should get anywhere from 0.25 ml to 0.5 ml, depending on their age. It seems implausible to us that all cats should require the same dose. Of course, you can try to give your cat a smaller dose, but this will be more difficult to do with the 1 ml dropper that’s included.

The coconut oil works to counteract the natural flavor of the CBD, which many cats don’t like. This seems to work well, as cat owners report their cats preferring this oil over others. However, coconut is a potential allergen for cats. Ingesting small amounts of coconut generally isn’t harmful. But larger amounts and especially the oil can cause diarrhea and vomiting. If you notice your cat throwing up or having loose stools in the hours after giving them this CBD oil, it could very well be an allergic reaction to the coconut oil.

Nevertheless, The Anxious Pet’s customers don’t seem to experience any problems and are actually very positive about its benefits for their cats. They report seeing an almost immediate reduction in anxiety related behavior, such as hiding, chewing on inedible things, litter box problems and gastric upset. Cats that were previously overgrooming to the point that they had no fur left are now anxiety-free with full, shiny coats.

As a reward for your love and care, you can also expect your cat to be more affectionate to you when you give them The Anxious Pet Organic Hemp Oil. Being free from fear allows your cat to let their true personality shine. It will likely surprise you how much sweetness is hiding under all that stress.

On their product page, The Anxious Pet claims that this hemp oil for cats is the most cost-effective on the market in terms of cost per mg CBD. However, this is not the case. The Anxious Pet Organic Hemp Oil will set you back a little over $0.12 per mg CBD, which is a very good deal. And if this is your first order, you can get a 20% discount using the code PEACE20.

The Anxious Pet also offers a subscription-based auto-refill deal which will give you a whopping 30% discount. This brings the price down to just under $0.09 per mg CBD.

Best CBD Product For Picky Cats: ElleVet Hemp CBD + CBDA Feline Complete Paste (600 mg)

ElleVet Sciences is a pet CBD company that really puts the science first. In fact, as far as we know they are the only pet CBD company that has actually proven its products’ efficacy through a clinical trial on dogs with osteoarthritis. And they continue to be at the very frontier of pet-focused CBD research with their own research team.

ElleVet Hemp Paste For Cats is a perfect solution for cats that are very picky about their food. It was developed especially with palatability in mind and has a delicious chicken flavor, which few cats can resist. The hemp paste comes in two dial-a-dose syringes, each of which contains 300 mg CBD in total, or 10 mg CBD per dose.

We unfortunately can’t say much about its real world efficacy. Of course, a successful clinical trial is a good indicator of a trustworthy product. And in this case the trial was conducted at Cornell University, which is definitely a reputable scientific institution. But we would still like to see some feedback from actual customers. Nevertheless, we are willing to give ElleVet Sciences the benefit of the doubt. They are still a young company and have so far shown promising results.

ElleVet Hemp Paste is one of the more affordable CBD products for cats, with a price of $74.95, or $0.12 per mg CBD. However, you can get 15% off if you use the code SAVE15 at checkout. If you like the product, you can go for a subscription and get the 15% discount on all future purchases. At this rate, you are paying just $63.71, or $0.11 per mg CBD.

Best CBD For Increasing Appetite: Innovet Pet PurCBD Hemp Oil For Cats (125 mg)

Innovet Pet was born out of the heartache and frustration of searching for a solution for a pet with an undiagnosed illness. Their main mission is to provide full spectrum CBD products to pet parents at affordable prices, because Innovet Pet’s founders have seen firsthand the veterinarian bills piling up without a solution in sight. Again and again, they and their growing customer base prove that relief can be just a drop away.

Innovet Pet PurCBG Hemp Oil with 125 mg of CBD is perfect for cats and small dogs. It is diluted using organic hemp seed oil as a carrier, which contains healthy fatty acids and can act as an anti-inflammatory. On top of that, hemp seed oil does not have the allergenic properties that some other oils (fish oil) can have.

Innovet Pet PurCBD Hemp Oil For Cats successfully reduces stress and improves the overall wellbeing of elderly cats. It is also a great option for cats that tend to undereat or just need to gain some weight. Innovet Pet’s CBD oil works very well to stimulate their appetite and encourages them to eat more. There are plenty of customer testimonials online from people who have tried PurCBD Hemp Oil on their cat or dog with great success.

Third party testing results are publicly available on Innovet Pet’s website. They list the results per batch, so it should be easy to look up the exact details of the product you purchased. However, the test results are sometimes outdated, we have found.

Innovet Pet uses hemp extracts sourced from Europe, not the US. Countries in Europe are lagging behind the US when it comes to legalization and, more importantly, regulation of CBD and cannabis-related products. Therefore the quality of European-sourced hemp products is considered less reliable. This shouldn’t be a problem if you had access to up-to-date testing results and could verify its quality, but unfortunately there is no guarantee in this area.

Innovet Pet has definitely succeeded at keeping their CBD Oil For Cats affordable. A single 30 ml bottle costs only $21.45, or $0.17 per mg CBD. If you go for the subscription, Innovet Pet will give you 15% off, making the total for one bottle $18.23, or $0.15 per mg CBD. On top of that, Innovet Pet will give you 50% off of the second product you buy!

Best Powdered CBD Supplement: Canna-Pet Advanced Hemp Capsules (170 mg)

If you prefer giving your cats herbal supplements over oils, you might want to give Canna-Pet Advanced Hemp Capsules a try. Instead of oil, they contain actual powdered, organic hemp. You can easily open up a capsule and mix its contents into some yummy wet food or a bit of probiotic yogurt and feed it to your cat.

Canna-Pet explicitly mentions that their products contain such a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes that they cause an entourage effect, which research has shown not to occur with plant-based cannabinoids. This is a clear example of a CBD company overstating the benefits of their products. In fact, Canna-Pet already received a warning from the FDA in 2015 about making unapproved medical claims about their products. These claims were subsequently removed, but they are clearly still pushing the boundaries.

On top of that, Canna-Pet does not provide their third party test results openly on their website. These are only available upon request. All of this put together makes Canna-Pet a less trustworthy company in our eyes.

Nevertheless, their products do have hundreds of positive reviews from happy customers. Anxious cats and arthritic, elderly cats respond to it very well, though it takes a few weeks for the effects to kick in. There are also cats who seem completely unaffected by this hemp powder, which leads us to conclude that it is overall less effective than CBD oil. Still, if your cat doesn’t tolerate CBD oil, Canna-Pet Hemp Capsules could be the perfect alternative.

In terms of price, Canna-Pet Advanced Hemp Capsules are the least cost-effective product we reviewed. Each capsule contains 4 mg CBD and there are 60 capsules in a bottle. With a total price of $57.99 this comes to $0.34 per mg of CBD, which is very expensive. If you opt for Canna-Pet’s Autoship subscription, you can have your hemp capsules shipped to you every few weeks against a 10% discount. This brings the price per mg of CBD down to $0.31, which is still a lot higher than most other CBD products at full price.

New customers get treated to a better deal. You can get yourself 20% off of any of Canna-Pet’s products with the code new_customer20.

Best CBD Soft Cat Treats: Honest Paws Calm CBD Soft Chews (120 mg)

Honest Paws is another pet CBD company that was started by a concerned pet parent looking for a better solution for their ailing pet. Their main motivation for promoting CBD for pets is its ability to replace or reduce the need for other medications, thereby limiting the risk of medicinal side- and interaction effects.

Honest Paws has received some, but not much online customer feedback so far. However, the reviews that they do get are very positive. Not only do customers report great results from using their products, they also praise Honest Paws for their excellent customer care.

Honest Paws Calm CBD Soft Chews for cats are an easy to dose method of giving your cat their daily CBD. Each treat contains 2 mg of CBD and has a chewy texture. The treats themselves are rather big, though. But you can easily crumble them over some wet food.

We do want to include a word of caution with this product. One of its main ingredients is chamomile flower powder. In herbal medicine, chamomile is considered a powerful anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant. However, there is little to no proof that it is in any way beneficial for cats. Moreover, too much chamomile is actually known to be harmful for cats. If you decide to give your cat Honest Paws CBD Soft Chews, watch out for any gastric upset or loss of appetite.

Honest Paws Calm CBD Soft Chews are relatively expensive. Even though a jar of treats doesn’t cost more than $29.99 at full price, or $25.49 on an auto-refill subscription, there are only 60 treats in a jar (120 mg CBD). The price per mg CBD is $0.25 at full price, or $0.21 with a subscription. If you are not ready to subscribe, but still want to take advantage of that 15% discount, use promo code Honest15 at checkout.

Best CBD Crunchy Treats: HolistaPet CBD Cat Treats (150 mg)

HolistaPet considers itself more of a natural pet health company, rather than just a pet CBD company. They take a holistic approach to pet health and aim to include plant-based, superfood ingredients in all their products. They have a strong philosophy that emanates throughout their entire website. They have literally received thousands of positive reviews from customers who have tried their products.

HolistaPet’s CBD Cat Treats are crunchy cat treats with a chicken and salmon flavor that cats really respond to. Each treat contains 2 mg CBD and just a few of them are enough to calm down even the most stressed out cat.

However, we couldn’t find any third party test results anywhere on HolistaPet’s website. We also checked the ingredients and couldn’t find any superfood ingredients. Like most crunchy cat treats, HolistaPet CBD Cat Treats contain a high amount of carbohydrates. If you are generally careful about your cat’s diet, you can get away with giving them the occasional crunchy treat. But if your cat is on a diet of mostly regular, carb-filled dry food, then you are better off giving them a CBD oil.

One bag of HolistaPet CBD Cat Treats contains 75 treats, totalling 150 mg of CBD. At full price they will cost you $24.95, or $0.17 per mg CBD. Or you can get a subscription and save no less than 25%, bringing the price for a bag of treats to $18.71, or $0.12 per mg CBD. If you are a new customer, you can also get a 25% discount when you sign up using your email.

Best CBD Food Topper: Petly CBD Cat Food Topper Salmon Flavor (450 mg)

Petly CBD sells CBD products for pets created from their own proprietary strain of organic hemp. They are based in Colorado and work exclusively with local farmers, who are required to adhere to the best practices for organic hemp farming.

While we applaud Petly’s stated commitment to pet health and organic farming, we should note that they do most of their product testing at their own laboratory. Given the controversial nature of CBD products in general, we advise you to be careful when purchasing products that are not tested by an independent third party lab. After sending them an email, Petly did provide us with third party test results, but they only have these done on random batches once a month or so.

Considering all their products, Petly CBD does receive a lot of favorable reviews from customers. They seem to be more popular among dog owners, as there are only a few reviews about their CBD products for cats. But as a whole, these are also very positive. Cats are less stressed and anxious, and experience a visibly better quality of life, even if they are nearing the end.

The reason why we recommend Petly’s CBD Cat Food Topper over their Pet Hemp CBD For Cats is that it seems to have a better effect faster and it is supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids. It is also easier to administer, as it tastes great and you can simply sprinkle it over your cat’s food. Cat owners report their cats being more affectionate and less stressed around people.

That said, we only recommend this product if all other options of giving your cat CBD have failed. Since Petly CBD Cat Food Topper is made to taste delicious, it contains some additives that are less than healthy, such as cassava flour, brewer’s yeast and molasses.

Petly CBD Cat Food Topper is very cost-effective and much more affordable than their CBD oil for cats. One flask costs $49.99 as a one time purchase, or $39.99 if you choose the subscription. That comes down to $0.11 and $0.09 per mg CBD, respectively, which makes Petly CBD Cat Food Topper the second most cost-effective product on our list.

Best Beginner CBD Oil: Procana Mini Breed CBD Oil For Cats (90 mg)

Procana is the only CBD company we reviewed that does not cater exclusively to pets. Procana actually offers a wide range of CBD products, including oils, topicals, chews and vape pens.

Procana Mini Breed CBD Oil is a great CBD oil for cats and cat parents who haven’t tried CBD oil before. The first time you give CBD to your cat, they will likely have a fairly strong reaction to it and feel very drowsy for a bit. Over time, and with more CBD, they slowly get used to it and are able to handle higher dosages or potencies.

Since Procana Mini Breed CBD Oil doesn’t have a very high potency, it is the perfect CBD oil to get your cat acquainted with CBD and its effects on the mind. It also has a peanut butter flavor that cats and dogs both seem to love and is surely a lot more palatable than CBD straight up.

However, we couldn’t find many customer reviews for Procana’s pet CBD oils.

Pricewise, Procana Mini Breed CBD Oil is also cheap to try. A single bottle costs only $16.99. There is 90 mg of CBD in each 30 ml bottle, which makes the price of 1 mg CBD just $0.19. Contrary to all other brands on this list, Procana does not offer a subscription or auto-refill option, so there is no further discount to be had.
